Sep. 1st, 2009 @ 10:45 am Outer Alliance Pride Day!

As a member of the Outer Alliance, I advocate for queer speculative fiction and those who create, publish and support it, whatever their sexual orientation and gender identity.  I make sure this is reflected in my actions and my work.

For those new folks, Face of the Enemy is my queer SF novel:

Helena 'Dray' Draybeck is a military brat finishing her final year of fighter pilot training at a Terran Military space station. She's cocky about everything except her dismal track record with women. Dray is driven to be a top pilot like her mother, but someone at the space station does not want Dray to succeed.

Jordan Bowers is the daughter of a high-ranking ambassador. She wants a career as far away from politics as possible. As one of the best cadets in the fighter pilot program, Jordan captures Dray's attention in more ways than one. But Jordan won't let anyone get close to her. She hides a terrible secret that could end her own career and turn Dray against her.

When an explosion on their training station turns into a full-fledged attack, Dray and Jordan are put on the fast track to active military duty. But Dray's enemy sabotages her assignment and her chances with Jordan.

The threat of war pits Dray and Jordan against family, questionable allies, and an enemy neither is prepared for. Can they build something more than friendship, or will war and family secrets tear these two women apart?

Face of the Enemy is a stand alone novel set in the Terra/Nova universe, where chip implants and DNA manipulation are commonplace, and bigotry drives an interstellar superpower.

I also have a Kindle short story, Chains of the Past about an unpopular cop who is forced into old case files and gets inadvertent help from a 30-year old ghost to solve a murder.

Aug. 12th, 2009 @ 02:14 pm an actual post
Long time no update. Won't say it's cuz nothing much is going on (tho nothing much is going on). But mostly cuz I forgot my password for the longest time.  Then reset it. Then forgot it again... then reset it. Then forgot it (thus the prior test post).

So the haps-
The missus' shoulder surgery went well. She's able to do most normal things (everyday activities) and should be riding her horse again in a couple of weeks.

Kids' summer vacation almost over. Means we all have to get up 1.5 hrs earlier pretty soon. SO not lookin forward to it.

Writing v. v. slowly. It's coming out good, but sooooo slow.  This'll be a long time comin' especially since...

Taking my first Archaeology class this Sept. Feeding the addiction to ancient dead things. Haven't been to school in decades, not even sure I remember HOW to take notes etc.  Should be a fascinating experience.. *cough*

A snippet of the SF WIP cuz I'm finally getting some momentum on the SF WIP (set in the Terra/Nova universe):

Kay tightened the strap on her oxygen tank and spat out a stream of qat juice. Qat wouldn't be the worst thing the cleaning crew would scrub off the deck by the end of this mission. "How long?"

Jax's eyes took on that distant look that meant he was accessing the HUD in his helmet. "Twenty minutes to drop."

Jax's mixed-breed Tarquin skin went even redder than normal as he fiddled with every strap and buckle on his suit and double-checked the line from his oxygen tank.

"You want some?" Kay tapped her traveling pharmacy in her other pocket. She had a pill for every kind of mission and for the downtimes between.

Jax shook his head. He was the only one who knew the extent of her stash, and it was much better than the Neuro-X they gave every grunt to kill pain, and the Dexalin to stimulate coagulation on wounds.

Sethi on the other hand, thought chewing Qat was her main vice. "He's not desperate to look Novan. You can chew qat and dye your hair black, but you're still pasty-faced Terran mierda."

Kay squeezed a stream spit through her teeth that landed on Sethi's black boots. "Cloned from Terran shit or home-grown clanless Novan shit like you, doesn't matter when the bullets fly, Private."

Sethi's brown face darkened in rage.

"Still sensitive about that demotion?" she said. "I can give you some pointers next time you go for a civilian."

"You're no better with women," he said through clenched teeth.

Kay's grin widened. "None of my dates have filed charges against me."

That was one taunt too many for him. He lunged for her, but she was faster. She used his momentum to flatten him against the bulkhead and had her knife wrapped around his oxygen line before he could retaliate.

"You want to breathe on this mission," she said, "or does your pure Novan blood let you suck asteroid dust in place of air?"

Jax stepped in. "That's enough, Kay." When she didn't budge, he pulled rank. "Step down, Private First Class."

It was a direct order, but he'd managed a subtle dig by using her full rank, one grade above Sethi's. Jax had her back, as always.

Kay let go of Sethi's oxygen line, but she didn't sheathe her knife until he turned his back to her and maneuvered to the other end of their cramped space. She rolled her shoulders to let go the tension and leaned back against her harness, spitting out the rest of her qat. The new kid's eyes were on her, but she was smart enough to keep out of it. Maybe she'd survive the first mission and earn the right to a name.

Jun. 5th, 2009 @ 04:23 pm Review for IN KEISHA's SHADOW
Tags:

IN KEISHA'S SHADOW got a nice review up at JustAboutWrite - sliightly spoilerish so beware!

The unspoilerish snippet from the review:
This young adult story is packed with the kinds of issues that young people grapple with—difficult issues that are hard to read about and hard to think about. However, Barret presents the topics with sensitivity and an awareness that will bring any reader to a better understanding of the emotional struggles involved in growing up in the modern world. Young women struggling with the same issues that Tori and Ashley do, will find In Keisha’s Shadow a story of redemption and hope. And while the story has appeal for young women, it will speak to and enlighten anyone of any age.

May. 19th, 2009 @ 12:42 pm In Support of PoC in SF/F
There's been quite a bit of foolishness going on lately in the reader/writer world of SF/F about this and that and complete erasure of people of color in fantasy and science fiction.

I haven't followed most of it. Frankly, the tidbits I saw were enough to know that many someones were acting like gits.

But many other someones have rallied together in support of a multi-ethnic future (and fantasty past), creating a community at:
http://community.livejournal.com/foc_u/

for Fen of Color.  Alas, I still haven't figured out what Fen means, but then it took time to figure out PoC and CoC etc.  I'm already a day late in my support post for this effort, so I'll take the time after this to look up what the fen stands for.

I won't toot my own whistle on my works that include PoC, but I will point out Tobias Buckell
He writes great SF with a Caribbean twist.  Go see the forum for more links to great writers with realistic, multicutural worlds.

May. 7th, 2009 @ 09:59 am Contemplating the new RWA GLBT org
So the Romance Writers of America have greated a GLBT romance special interest group (erm... or  something like that).

Since I think at least one f-list person is a RWA member, and maybe others -

What do y'all see as the bennie of joining this new group, as a lesfic author?

(fwiw- the price is about $135 when you combine RWA dues w/ the GLBT dues - and that means the act of membership would have to sell over 100 books to break even).

May. 1st, 2009 @ 12:55 pm LAVENDER SECRETS in ebook!
Bedazzled Ink has published LAVENDER SECRETS as an ebook!

There's also a sale on all their ebooks that ends today (sorry for last minute notice) 10% off if you enter APRILSALE in redemption code. (at least I think it ends today...)

Anyway, not much else going on in the writing world. I'm outlining the next Terra/Nova SF book, but things are dog-slow.  The missus hurt her shoulder so I'm busy busy w/ the house, kids, dogs, sheep etc. Plus trying to get veggies going in the garden.

I'm all about the grow ur own these days. Even tried some of the 'edible' wild plants around.  For the record  - voilet flowers? kinda tasty. Dandelion leaves? Bitter as ALL GET OUT.  bluck. Edible is a relative term for them.

Apr. 12th, 2009 @ 07:28 pm Amazon's anti-GLBT policy
Amazon.com, in it's infinite screwedup-ness, has decided to remove rankings from all GLBT books (at least all that I know of).  If I search on my name, I only get one book instead of three.  (Lord knows why that book surivived being amazon ranked).
(see Amazon Rank for the appropriate google bomb)

Time to update the website and strip all amazon links.

Mar. 25th, 2009 @ 05:06 pm Talk about symbolism...
So some of y'all might remember awhile back I posted about this recurring dream I have, where my house suddenly has tons of secret rooms I never knew about. Someone kindly pointed me to a good dream interpretation of that one, where it  signifies new or unexplored talents/opportunities etc.

So at work, I have a BRIEF opportunity to lead a visible, cross-functional team.  Was having a blast.  Nice unexplored territory for me yadda yadda.

But then... (cuz there's always a But Then...) the boss decides I'm having too much fun on this side task and yanks it away from me.  Gives it to someone else and has me working w/ that person (read FOR that person) on what used to be  MY PROJECT.

So Last night's dream... (you can see it coming, can't u?) -

My house is no longer my house. I'm renting it now. And all those new hidden rooms? Well the 'landlady' has rented them all out to noisy pain-in-the-butt families.  All I have to myself now is a bedroom. The rest of the house is shared w/ these families.

...doesn't get much more symbolic than that, does it.

Mar. 20th, 2009 @ 07:26 pm Posted Excerpt of IN KEISHA'S SHADOW
Kinda late with this, but I finally updated my website and posted an excerpt of IN KEISHA'S SHADOW.

I've been a bad bad blogger.  What can I say, but twitter and facebook are keeping me busy.  You get used to 140 character updates and conversations. Next thing you know, writing a blog post seems like writing a 100 page essay in comparison!

Yeah, you wouldn't think and author could be that lazy about writing...

In the meanwhile, still chugging through the outline for my next SF book.  Chug chug chug. This one will be heavy on the space opera/military SF, light on the romance.

Feb. 25th, 2009 @ 09:10 pm In Keisha's Shadow now available!!
Yes! Finally IN KEISHA's SHADOW is out in  print and ebook!  Ebook is far cheaper if that format floats your boat, and there's a further ebook discount of 10% until March 15th.

Just enter IDESOFMARCH in the Redemption Code field on the checkout page. (This works for all Bedazzled Ink ebooks so feel free to pick up Andi Marquettes latest and L-J  Baker's latest as well - plug plug plug).

I haven't created the excerpt yet, so until then, the cover blurb:

Dumped by her high school sweetheart for not being out and proud, bi-racial
Tori Kahl struggles with college life, her academic-demanding mother,
and the legacy of her dead sister Keisha. Her only escapes are riding
her horse, drinking, and cutting herself. Then Ashley, the brash and
flirty new boarder, shows up at the stables and not only challenges
Tori’s top rider status, but shakes her world of self-pity as they cope
with the pains of growing up.

Oh, and did I mention WOOHOOO!!

Feb. 5th, 2009 @ 10:04 am In Keisha's Shadow announced!!
Yes, you can finally see the cover art  for In Kiesha's Shadow that took so long (well, not as long as the edit/rewrite cycle).   And the all important cover blurb:

Dumped by her high school sweetheart for not being out and proud, bi-racial
Tori Kahl struggles with college life, her academic-demanding mother,
and the legacy of her dead sister Keisha. Her only escapes are riding
her horse, drinking, and cutting herself. Then Ashley, the brash and
flirty new boarder, shows up at the stables and not only challenges
Tori’s top rider status, but shakes her world of self-pity as they cope
with the pains of growing up.

Coming out in March!  So far only Barnes and Noble lists it as pre-order, but more will come closer to the publication date.  And it will come out in ebook as well.

Jan. 17th, 2009 @ 02:59 pm Added short story up on Booksie
Taking Booksie for a test-run.  I stuck Signs up there (lesbian short fic) to see what activity it gets.  If you've read my short stories, you've probly seen this one before.

So far, I like it better than scribd for free fiction/promo purposes because it allows you to link to Amazon if you have a book for sale.

(Yeah, I'm gearing up for the promo phase of In Keisha's Shadow, my next literary masterpiece..*cough*  heh)

Jan. 12th, 2009 @ 07:58 pm DFF: Dead Friends Forever
Okay so I haven't read this book yet, but the title (DFF: Dead Friends Forever) drew
me in.

Then I found the youtube book trailer.

Now if you've noticed much 'round here, you've noticed I have little respect for the book trailer to draw in readers.  This one, I gotta say, I think works (especially for the YA audience). It has good background music (rock), flashy, colorful pictures, and a reasonable amount of text. (2.5 min long and held my attention, even tho I think trailers should only be 30 sec long ;-)

That was enough to get me to dig up the author's excerpts for the book.

Cute enough writing that I might get it for my kids. I think they'd enjoy it. (and if I do, it's cheaper direct from the publisher.)

...and thus endith the tale of how a book title drew me in... ;-)

Dec. 30th, 2008 @ 06:48 pm L-J Baker's latest book available now!
Adijan and Her Genie

Adijan, a poor messenger girl in an Arabian Nights fantasy world,
wishes she could build a world-spanning business empire. Shalimar, her
wife, wishes Adijan would spend more time at home. Their landlord
wishes Adijan would pay the rent. Adijan's brother-in-law wishes she
would get trampled by a herd of camels so that he could marry his
sister Shalimar to someone affluent and influential. And of all the
wishes in the world, Adijan wishes the genie she's saddled with would
grant her wishes instead of treating her with disdain.

Be careful what
you wish for in a world of genies, sorcerers, and flying carpets.

Dec. 28th, 2008 @ 04:53 pm resolutions
So how many resolutions you gonna make? I'm looking at three different
categories:

- work (aka the day job)
- writing
-life (what happens between work and writing)

Question is  - do I pick ONE resolution for each, in the hopes that I can keep
one per category?  Or do I overload them each w/ resolutions, in the hopes
that  won't break at least one of them?

And no, NOT making resolutions isn't an option. It's too much fun to pipedream
what I'll accomplish in the next year.  And no, I've never successfully kept
ONE.SINGLE.RESOLUTION.

ever.

so  - anyone making a resolution or three this year?

Dec. 16th, 2008 @ 08:54 pm "In Keisha's Shadow" getting closer to reality!
So I'm working with the publisher on the cover art for 'In Keisha's Shadow'.
Most exciting.  We've bounced back and forth a bit on some issues, but it
looks like it's going in a mutually agreed on direction so all is good.

Definite bennie of working with small press is that I *can* have influence
over the cover art.  This one was tricky because it has a person (Tori) on
the cover. But I lucked out, and it doesn't look cheezy, and it DOES look
like Tori (rough around the edges biracial 18-yr old).'

And on the plus plus side - major edits done!  I'll get galleys/proofs at some
point (and maybe a copyedit go-round in between).  But all's good!

Anyway, I'll point to the cover as soon as it's available to the public!

Nov. 28th, 2008 @ 10:34 am So many ways to waste time...
So little motivation NOT to!

So today's online addiction is complements of The Lesbian Question. Women  post questions about sexuality/coming out etc. And you get to play the Wise Lesbian and give your 2 cents. Interesting stuff. And makes me realize that yes, there IS still a strong need for supporting folks still coming out/dealing w/ their sexuality.

There are on-again/off-again debates in lesfic-land about whether the coming-out story is overdone at this point.  I'm thinking no. (of course, it's my fav story type to read and write, so I may be biased here...)
