I've been a member of RWA for several years now, and I'm very happy to be a member of the new chapter. RWA has a lot of member resources--the monthly magazine and various newsgroups, for starters. RWA as an organization caters to career-focused writers of romance, which makes it different from a lot of lesfic groups that are aimed as much toward readers as they are toward writers. A number of RWA chapters have online writing workshops and/or writing contests. The national conference is fantastic, and I make every effort to attend.
There are a number of benefits. For one thing, having our own chapter raises the visibility of GLBT romance within RWA. That's huge, because only a few years ago, RWA came very close to limiting the romance genre by definition to the story of a man and a woman.
Addendum to previous comment: I think ANY writer can benefit from RWA membership. The RRW chapter has a lot of published authors, a lot of PAN authors, and the focus is on being a published writer of GLBT romance. Networking and supporting each other is a big part of most RWA chapters, and I imagine that would be the case here as well.
;-) Thanks.
I'm still debating. Partly because I don't just write romance (and I'm writing less of it lately, rather than more). But I do like the idea of supporting the new group etc. decisions decisions | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
